What is hosting and why do I need it?

Your website has a URL (Uniform Resource Locator), the address your customer/clients type in to find you.  Hosting providers have servers that store your website pages and content.  Basically a home for your files.

Do your home work before you lock yourself into a plan.  Domains can be moved but it can be a pain depending on who you host with.  I’ve hosting with InMotion hosting since 2012 but plan to move my websites to SiteGround in 2018.  My reasons for moving are; fast servers, price, uptime, security, backups, support and free SSLs.

What is an SSL? Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a browser.  This link ensures that all data passed between the web server and browsers remain private and integral.  SSL is an industry standard and is used by millions of websites in protection of their online transactions with their customers.  It’s the difference between http://yourdomainname.com and https://yourdomainname.com.
